FT‑710 FT8 / WSJT‑X Radio Menu Checklist (copy for reference)

CAT / PTT
- CAT Rate (baud): 38400   (WSJT‑X must match)
- CAT TOT: OFF
- CAT RTS: DISABLE (usually not needed)
- PTT Select: CAT
- TX Delay: 200 ms (optional; gives linear amp/ATU time if used)

DATA / USB Audio
- Data Mode: DATA‑U (USB-D)
- Data PTT: CAT
- Data MIC Gain: 0 or very low (mic is not used in DATA)
- DATA IN Select: USB
- DATA OUT Level: start ~ 40–50%
- USB MOD Level / USB Audio Input Level: start ~ 40–50%
- USB Audio Output Level (to headphones/speaker): taste (receive level into WSJT‑X should show ~30 dB on the WSJT‑X input level meter during band noise)
- Monitor (MONI): OFF for clean TX monitoring (optional)
- Speech Processor/Compression: OFF in DATA modes
- TX EQ / RX EQ: OFF or FLAT for DATA

RF / Power / ALC
- RF Power: 20–50 W recommended for FT8 (continuous duty). Start at 20–30 W if internal fan usage is a concern.
- ALC: Aim for little to no ALC movement on TX. If ALC is moving strongly, REDUCE the WSJT‑X output (computer level) or the radio’s USB MOD / DATA OUT settings.
- IPO/ATT: As needed to keep waterfall not overloaded (keep WSJT‑X input meter under ~40 dB with strong signals).

General Operating Hints
1) Connect a single USB cable from PC to the FT‑710 rear USB; install Yaesu/CP210x drivers if Windows requires them.
2) In Windows: set the default format of the “USB Audio CODEC” (Recording & Playback) to 48000 Hz, 16‑bit.
3) In WSJT‑X:
   - Radio tab: select “Yaesu FT‑710”; PTT CAT; Mode = Data/Pkt; Split = Fake It; CAT baud must match radio.
   - Test CAT (should turn green). Test PTT (TX should key in DATA‑U).
   - Audio tab: set Input and Output to “USB Audio CODEC” (or equivalent name).
4) On‑air power and linearity: Set WSJT‑X “Pwr” slider or system output so that ALC barely flickers; reduce if IMD reports are poor.
5) If your WSJT‑X build doesn’t list FT‑710, you can temporarily pick FT‑DX10 or use Hamlib rig number for FT‑710 if available in your version; CAT commands are compatible enough for basic FT8.

Troubleshooting Quick Notes
- CAT connects but no PTT: ensure PTT = CAT (not RTS/DTR) and no other program is holding the COM port.
- No decode: check that WSJT‑X input device is the radio’s codec and that your system clock is synced (use NTP/“Time Sync”).
- Radio exits DATA‑U: set Mode = Data/Pkt in WSJT‑X and ensure Split = “Fake It” or “Rig” (Fake It recommended).
- Distorted reports: lower PC output level and/or radio USB MOD/GAIN until ALC is minimal.
