FEMA (ICS/NIMS)

The following three courses are required for the Communicator Type IV credential and are recommended for all ARES/RACES operators. They are web-based and take an hour or two each to complete.

State of California

The following online course is required for the Communicator Type IV credential and recommended for all ARES/RACES operators. It is web-based and takes about an hour to complete.

SEMS G606 - Standardized Emergency Management System Introduction (Online Course) To locate the Locating the SEMS G606 Online Course:

  1. Go to the CSTI web site
  2. Click on the yellow Browse Training button on the home page.
  3. Click the small computer (blue rectangle) icon (online course), on the left Type menu.
  4. Scroll down, locate, and click on the Standardized Emergency Management System Introduction (SEMS G606) Online Course.
  5. Click Request
  6. Click Launch

The Bay Area Urban Areas Security Initiative Regional Training & Exercise Program offers many FEMA and State of California training classes, hosted by Bay Area emergency management agencies.

Santa Clara County

The Santa Clara County Office of Emergency Management teaches or hosts many FEMA and State of California training classes. They also produce some original courses specific to Santa Clara County.

The county expects county employees who work in the county EOC to complete their "Core 100" training, which includes:

This same level of training is expected of the RACES Unit Leader position in the county EOC.
